Thanks to YouTube we have seen skateboarders jumping over cars, TED speeches and a plethora of stupid pet, kangaroo and marketer tricks vying for our attention. Most are kinda funny, some are helpful and educational, but generally they’re forgettable. Point 1. This video is from a year or so ago, jump down and watch the second video, the most recent by contestant Susan Boyle.
A common question I get, especially from frustrated job seekers, is “How can I maintain a positive attitude, which I know I need, when nothing is going right for me?” Tough question, that. Point 2.
Far too often all of us judge a book by its cover..we overlook the commonplace for the next shiny penny. We don’t give the average guy or gal an opportunity to really show us what THEY have…we think we already know. Point 3.
You may have seen these two videos, both from a British TV Show called “Britain’s Got Talent.” It is basically an amateur talent show, not unlike “American Idol,” or the American version of BGT, called cleverly “America’s Got Talent.”
If you have a few minutes to spare, please watch these two videos of unlikely contestants Paul Potts and Susan Boyle. If it is the first time you have seen them, and you don’t have either chills down your back or moist eyes, check yourself in at Urgent Care.
I am pretty confident you might have both. Point, game, match.
Last point: I am NOT a musical sort of guy. Hated Cats, fell asleep in Phantom. But Les Miserables, I’ve seen it at least twice, and I’d even drive downtown again to see it.

These 2 performances left a lump in my throat that will last the day I’m sure. (And that’s from a gal who never, ever cries at movies.)
Me too, Karri. Glad you enjoyed them as much as I did.
I already thanked you on Twitter but wanted to thank you again for finding Susan Boyle’s full performance! The little snippet I heard wasn’t enough for me. I, too, have seen Les Miserable years ago in NY and loved it! We have the CD’s.
This is also a great example of how we, as a people, often make incorrect presumptions about someone at first glance. So, for everyone out there, esp. employers…don’t judge a book by its cover; give everyone an opportunity to speak and show you their true worth!
Thank you Susan Boyle!! (ok, I’m all choked up now.)
Thanks Lisa….maybe this fresh PR will mean that Les Miserables will go on USA tour again. BTW, did you watch both videos.
Maybe I am just being a guy here, but did you notice that the middle judge, Amanda. underwent a complete makeover? It is the same person.
Fascinating, and kudos to middle judge Amanda for owning up to misplaced skepticism. This message of not judging a book by its cover will stay with me for a while.
Great story and example, Hayli. We need more of these moments.
GL,
Yes, I’ve already seen Paul Potts and his performance was just as moving. Both are awe-inspiring and I tear up whenever I listen to them. It’s so nice to hear true talent. Awesome, in the truest sense of the word.
Oh, and yes, I realized that was Amanda. Women notice those things quicker and easier than men, I think. lol
I’ve seen this a few times and still get chills and damp eyes. The world still is a place where dreamers can find a way.
[...] net,….it is all about presentation, song selection and vocal ability. As Susan Boyle just demonstrated, a “surprise,” just like those in every good presentation, works in a gigantic way, [...]
GL, Saw them both at the time and have watched them again and again over time. Simply amazing stuff for all the reasons everyone has expressed. Part of it comes, I think, from that piece in all of us that pulls for the underdog and the thrill one feels for them when they win. Just wonderful.
[...] There is nothing more American than rooting for the underdog. We love to see the disadvantaged, the ill equipped, the young, the old, what ever and whoever do well and succeed. That is why the Susan Boyle video was so popular. ( She was the British frump singer of a few months back. See her video here.) [...]
