Dave, Wow, can I relate to your situation. The way you describe your corporate experience sounds painfully like mine, in many respects anyway. I started freelancing in 2005 after quite a long time in the corporate world. For me it's been a mixed bag. On the plus side - and it's a huge plus side - I love the work; it's a joy. It never gets dull, there's always a fresh challenge. Downsides: big swings in income, uncertainty about future revenue sources, lack of a team environment (one thing I really liked about corporate work). All in all, I'd say if someone isn't happy in his or her career, they really should do something about it. I've seen too many people just live with it for years, letting discomfort fester so long they just become frozen. It can be very sad. I think you either have to accept your situation and embrace it, or make a change.

Oh I love this article, I am officially adding the term Complacency Disorder to the word 'Intra-prenuer' that I use as a freelancer and Dave, I think you've captured the essence, challenges, frustrations and joys of being a creative in an uncreative environment really well, thanks.

Nice vlog and a great post there. I can relate to your experiences.

I have had my creativity curtailed by short term oriented family owned business managers. I have had to resign rather than undergo the torture on a couple of occasions. On the other hand, I have had owner managers who had given me a free hand and have seen the results and rewarded me for it too.

I guess that it all boils down to the personality of the boss. Little one can do about it unless one is too valuable to the organization.
