My very first ‘grownup’ job was in Indianapolis, which happens to be JobDig’s newest market. Whoo-hoo. We are over-the-moon excited about bringing our unique employment media solutions to Indy employers, active and passive jobseekers and the rest of central Indiana.
Interruption for a Great Deal for Boston area readers–Izabella Tabarovsky, a fantastic career coach out of Washington, DC, will be in the Boston area next week, and will give a FREE 45 minute consultation on Aug 5-6. Be sure you mention WWDS, information is here.
My first job was actually a 12-week training course at Ft Benjamin Harrison, an Army post there. I landed there with two strikes against me. Strike one: Air Force. For the Army guys, either on the way to VietNam or just back, us AF guys were wussies. Strike two: 21-year-old second lieutenants were as laughable as your ‘favorite son’ Dan Quayle being on Dancing With the Stars.
I did learn two important things at Fort Ben. Number one–if you can avoid it, never-ever live in a mobile home P-O-S trailer, especially one that was ‘for rent.’ Seriously. Number two–flag football played on Army posts in ‘Rec’ leagues ignored the ‘don’t hit’ rule, anything and everything was legal if you were going for the flag. I had played football, then rugby, and thought I was pretty tough. But I sure got my comuppance during those flag football games. Remember when Alex Karrass’ Mongo knocked out the mule in Blazing Saddles?–he played on my team, that guy. Tough. I did make some good friends (for protection mostly) like Gar Trusley, is he still in Indy? Who names their kid after a carp?
Further…and the main point:
There is no better way to understand a new community than to make friends with the blogging community. Indianapolis has a vibrant group and I have linked to many of them here, not all–please leave yours in the comments section if I missed you. Thanks to Ring Of Surf for their help in locating these awesome writers. I can’t wait to get to know them better. Click each title to read.

Naptown Jams
Welcome to Naptown Jams, Jason Marcuon’s idea sanctuary for books, brands, technology, and so much more. I’m a National Account Manager at John Wiley & Sons, Inc. (I sell books.) Since 1995 I’ve worked in the book publishing industry in sales & marketing. Thanks to Wiley’s leading position in the computer book publishing world, I’ve immersed myself in some groundbreaking technologies. Every day I help sell and promote bestselling brands like For Dummies, Visual, Betty Crocker, MTV, Pillsbury, Webster’s New World, Cliffs Notes, and Extreme Tech. And, I’m fortunate to have partnered with some of the biggest retailers in the world. So that’s what I do. It’s not just because I have to though. Mom brought an Apple computer into our home in 1980, so technology has always been around. And some of my other interests – music, sports, gadgets, friends – have taken on new lives thanks to technology over the years. I like being an information sponge, absorbing what’s what as quickly and efficiently as I can. Naptown Jams is my own little information sanctuary.

IndyInsights
Bill Benner, associate director of communications for the Indianapolis Convention & Visitors Association, has lived in and around Indianapolis his entire life. And he knows his way around a keyboard. He was a journalist – a sportswriter and columnist for The Indianapolis Star – for more than 30 years, and continues to write a weekly column for The Indianapolis Business Journal. He’s grown up with the city, watched it change and evolve from the ordinary to the extraordinary. He has a sense for what Indy was, what it is and hopefully, what it will be. So Bill has tucked his trusty reporter’s notebook into his back pocket. He’ll write about what he sees, what he experiences, what he feels, what he thinks. He’ll provide glimpses into our people and places and the things that make Indianapolis unique and different, and occasionally express his thoughts on city issues.

Jacob Leffler’s Short Attention Span Theatre
The Short Attention Span Theatre(SAST) is the blog of Jacob Leffler. Dire Mirth
A lot of fortuitous, seemingly disjunctive stories, reviews, and thoughts that make up the life of one mid-20’s Indianapolis woman. By day, and often by night, Emilee is a law student in downtown Indianapolis. The rest of the time she is a runner, traveler, chef, sci-fi geek, bookworm, venture web-developer, gamer, and on and on. If you enjoy random, geeky, and often silly forays into life – then you will probably, maybe, in all likelihood enjoy Dire Mirth.
The Gimcrack Miscellany
“An authority on a bunch of unrelated articles that ultimately have no long lasting meaning or effect,” or you can shorten that to “the blog of miscellaneous gewgaw and bric-a-brac”, or, even more abbreviated, and in it’s purest form, “The Gimcrack Miscellany.” Ah, there you are, Peter.

Started in January 2006, Four Square No. 266 is a personal journal, of sorts. I live with the lovely wife, El Presidente (my son), and two dogs, Lucy and Ethel. We reside in the historic Irvington neighborhood in Indianapolis, Indiana. Our house is four square in style. It is numbered “266.”

Just to clarify this, “Ring of Surf” or rather ringsurf.com had nothing to do with the compilation of these bloggers. Every Indianapolis Blogger joined that particular ring through the Indianapolis Bloggers blog. That blog keeps a full list of every “official” Indianapolis Blogger.
Either way, thanks for the article.
