So yesterday Harley and I are talking about his daughter who is working at a hospital in Tennessee. She’s 23.
She is assisting in the emergency room when a doctor decides he has to intubate a patient. If you happen not to watch HOUSE, you can see what intubate means here. Right as he is starting with this procedure , one of the new-hire nurses pipes up and says OUTLOUD, “you are just doing that to crank up the bill!” The doctor stops what he is doing, looks at the in-charge nurse, and says “get her out of here, and I never want to see her again.” Harley’s daughter couldn’t believe it. “Dad,” she asked, “why didn’t her parents tell her what not to do on her first day? She should have kept her mouth shut.”
It got me to thinking. There are some rules that I may not have mentioned to my kids about work. I posted 42 of them over at US NEWS and WORLD REPORT today. These are the do’s and don’ts for your first week at the new job.

No doubt, these are great reminders — and most of them really apply to subsequent weeks of work, well beyond those crucial first impressions.
Nevertheless, I can’t shake the feeling that most of these are, to an extent, essentially common sense… and it always worries me that so many people are lacking the proper social skills not to violate more than just a couple of these rules.
And unfortunately, in my experience at least, ‘book smart’ people lacking a good head fixed solidly on their shoulders are more frequent than one might expect.

The top ten are a given, but “Don’t ask for new equipment or supplies.” is one a lot of newbies do around here and it really leaves a bad taste…

Glenn…no question, these things are common sense, at least one would hope. Nevertheless, a good reminder given by someone other than a parent always helps.
