You brought tears to my eyes with this piece, because I remember your mother.
I went to a seminar about twenty-five years ago on mother/son relationships. Jewish mothers are the prototype of the suffering mother and their sons take on a moral obligation because of it, much of the Jewish cultural dynamic. Japanese mothers are Jewish mothers at the next level, since they take on all the suffering – but in stoic silence.
Your mother always showed a quiet dignity in the face of her challenges (which were major). Thus, the fine son with an unwavering moral compass.

What a fine tribute. I received my first actual, mailed, addressed to me Mother’s Day card from my daughter yesterday. Addressed to my name (not Mom) with a little heart on each side of my name. So even before I opened it I was hooked. My mom won’t go to bed until she hears from all three of us and blamed me for her not getting to eat ice cream because I called her so late (8 pm, she’s in FLA, I’m three time zones away)and she had to go buy it. But she was glad and proud to have resisted the temptation. God bless Moms. I’d be nothing without mine.
