Tonight, Sunday, March 16, HBO begins its seven-part series on John Adams, the second president of the USA,  the ignored “father” of the country.   There are thousands of letters written by John and Abigail Adams, about half have been published, which reflect both Adams’ genius and the part they play in the formation of our country.

As an example, consider Abigail’s letter to their son, John Quincy, a high school senior at the time, who had to be talked into accompanying his father on a trade/diplomatic mission to France.

“These are the times in which a genius would wish to live.  It is not in the still calm of life, or the repose of a pacific station, that great characters are formed.  The habits of vigorous mind are formed in contending with difficulties.  Great necessities call out great virtues.  When a mind is raised, and animated by scenes that engage the heart, then those qualities which would otherwise lay dormant, wake into life and form the character of the hero and the statesman.”

Paul Giametti plays John Adams brilliantly.
