Richard N. Bolles is the only true iconic figure in the job seeker space. He has been THE authority for decades…in fact, the entire section in the bookstore about careers and jobs never existed until Dick started writing about it. His book, What Color is Your Parachute, is consistently at the top of every best seller list…and it should be.
The normal business book is a success if several thousand sell at the bookstore. He has sold ten million. 10,000,000.
Last week, I visited with Dick, his lovely wife Marci and a representative from TenSpeed Press. For me, it is sort of pilgrimmage of sorts. I go visit Dick with no agenda, hidden or planned. I just enjoy his company. Each time, I leave feeling even more energized about this business and the services that JOBDIG provides its audiences.
If you are interested in anything remotely connected to careers, career counseling, and HR, you also have the opportunity to get to know Dick. Every few months, he conducts a five day seminar in his home in Danville, California. You really should consider going…it will be a life-changing event for you. If Peter Drucker had such a seminar, would you have attended? Or Sam Walton? Jack Welch? Of course you would have. You have a unique opportunity…I hope some of you make use of it.
Oh, one more thing…I am not so sure you even have to be in HR to get a lot out of it.

Good stuff! I think we’ve had 5 copies of his books over the years. Like you said, truly an icon.
But, it makes me wonder. Why were you there with a rep from TenSpeed? A new book in the works?
A new book? Yes, I am pitching a new book to TenSpeed tentatively titled “What Color Are Your Shorts, an Entrepreneur’s Primer.” They were not interested.
No accounting for taste.
Well, they aren’t the only publisher out there…
Hi G.L.,
I’m a baby boomer, too, and just found your blog — love the advice and humor in it!
“What Color” was/is definitely the “job search Bible” since it was published, and now I’ve found a book that compliments it called Getting from College to Career: 90 Things to Do Before You Join the Real World by Lindsey Pollak that I am giving to my son, a college freshman, to read in his spare time. (I figure he will get it done by the time he graduates.) Pollak has worthwhile tips for college students (or any Gen Y/Millenial job seekers) to do before they get to the resume and job interview stage.
I think it’s brilliant in its approach and the way it speaks to our kids’ generation.
Thanks for telling me about Bolles’ 5 day seminar — it’s even in my home state, so will check it out. I personally am still wondering what to do when I grow up.
Cheers,
Linda
Always being around Dick is a learning experience. Dick is a man
of values and principles, to mention few of his qualities.
He is not only an ICON but an inspiration.
I attended his seminar in January 2008 in his home in Danville.
No one will ever forget such an experience.
Dick, Marci and Jim Kell made the whole experience memorable.
GO FOR IT if you are still wondering what your passion and mission
is in life. Hay, you will never regret it.
Good luck
Randa
I can’t agree with you more! I just attended his 5-day workshop in January 2009 and the information, wit and humor is wonderful. Dick himself is inspiring as a man who lives his life to the fullest, with his beautiful wife Marci by his side, and he is so very intelligent. Not only is he a leader in the job search process, but the search for meaning and what is your God-given mission in life is the core of his message delivered in a down to earth way. I hope to be a life-long learner like he is at 82!
If you have a chance grab the next workshop!
