I am in New York City today, presenting Jobdig at a Private Equity Conference. My presentation was 13th out of 20 this afternoon.

Conferences like this are good. Other entreprenuers like us get to present their companies to a roomful of venture capitalists…and, if you get their interest, meetings are held and investments are made.

The problem is, most entrepreneurs are exceptionally passionate about their companies UNTIL they start reading powerpoint presentations to an audience. Borrrriinnnnnnng.

I did something totally different today. As our 40-slide presentation was going, I simply told a story about one of our customers…told how this company got started, and how we help them find great candidates so they can deliver on their corporate goals. It was very different and my talk did not match at all with the slides.

So far, so good. Immediately after, I could tell we had their interest and it looks likely that we got through to the right people.

Time will tell.

This experience was counter-intuitive but I would recommend it others who are faced with the prospect of making a same-same presentation to the same group. I think being different wins.
