Actually, it was a white albino squirrel family… a daddy squirrel and his son…little Tommy Squirrel.
We were watching these two squirrels play…being white they stood out against the blue sky, no leaves on the trees. Daddy Squirrel was apparently teaching young Tommy S. how to jump from one tree to the other. And it was an impossible leap…Daddy could barely make it…but he did time after time. He would start about ten feet back…run like crazy, then jump–fly–across to the other tree branch. Little Tommy S, would watch and watch. We could almost see him quiver as if to say…’you have got to be kidding! Not me.’
At least five or six times, the Daddy Squirrel made the trip,–run, fly, land and come back and do it again. Finally, the last time, he didn’t come back. He stayed on the other tree branch…and just stared at Tommy in the other tree. He just stared at him for the longest time. Finally, Tommy started to move. He started down the branch…no dummy squirrel, this little Tommy…he was going to the ground and run over to his dad! But just then, he stopped, gathered himself up and started running toward the end of the branch. No way, I thought, this is not going to end well.
But, he coiled himself up, and started to seemingly fly. He made the other branch and father and son started playing around in the other tree.
One of my kids was watching this with me…I forget which one… we watched this scene for what seemed like five minutes or so in silence. After the successful jump, my kid said, ‘well, I guess if you don’t want to spend your whole life in one tree, sooner or later you have to jump.”
