Three umpires got together after the game was called because of rain.
The first one asked, “How do you guys know which one is a ‘ball’ and which one is a ’strike?’”
Second umpire says, “Simple. Balls or strikes, I calls them as I sees them.”
Third umpire says, “Balls or strikes, I calls them as they are.”
First one says, “Balls or strikes, it ain’t nothin’ till I call it.
(Attributed to Hall of Fame umpire Bill Klem, who died in 1951.)
What I learned from this story was that often, the person in charge has to be so clear, so sure of himself, that he recognizes that he has the capability to change outcomes and results. Whether or not he chooses to do it is another matter entirely. We all tell others we perform better in a more collegial environment; often the opposite is true. I killed myself working hard for a boss who was a bit deranged…but in a good, over the top confident way.
Thanks again to Robert at middlezonemusings for the idea of What I learned From Sports.
