Vision board destination.

Seeing what you want is important.

Ima and I engaged in a fun and hopefully useful project last night. It is called a vision board. The idea is that it is important to see what you want. Visualization and goal setting are not to be underestimated. A lot of time “soft” skills or projects are ignored or sneered at. Feelings are discarded and respect is given to the bottom line etc.

Guess what all that soft stuff is all that really counts. Your life might take you to amazing places and surround you with amazing people. If you aren’t happy and fulfilled it won’t matter. Ever been on a vacation or night out and not liked it, because something was on your mind? That stuff on your mind was soft stuff. It was what you were feeling. All stress and fear is about uncertainty. If you can achieve more certainty you can be happier. Knowing where you are going can help. The path isn’t always easy, but if you know it is taking you where you want to go you will be fine.

I say all of this as a build up to the vision board. Here is the project for you or you and a spouse to engage in. It will cost $5 and take 3-4 hours. Would you invest that in your happiness? Oh and you will have to turn off the TV. The idea is simple, the execution is what is hard. If you can’t do this for your happiness, you probably aren’t serious about it. Keep chasing more money and see if that works…

So here it is. Get some magazines, family pictures and your internet browser ideally with a color printer. Go to your local craft shop, Target etc. Buy some white glue (the kind you ate as a kid) and a foam board 3×4 feet.

Now comes the fun part. Go to the magazines and think about all of the things you want in life, I mean really want and in a big way. Think about this all the way to the end of your personal road. This means things, relationships, travel, experiences, feelings etc.

No treat those magazines like a catalog and cut out the images that relate. Go to your favorite search engine and use the images section to type in key words, then print out the pictures.

When I first started this project I thought my board would end up looking like a sloppy version of the Robb Report. I was pleased that it ended up with lots of images conveying travel, adventure, family, kids and smiling people. It wasn’t about the stuff for me at all.

Glue your images to the foam board and keep it propped up somewhere where you can see it. I suggest the bedroom as it is a personal thing. The great thing is to see how a spouse visualizes the future. I started cutting my pictures out with straight edges and was going to paste them in, all very rectilinear. My wife Ima was off to the races with rounded corners, collages and putting personal image into exotic settings and locales.

Yes money is on the board, but is small in relation to family, health and happiness. This is a very good project. And by the way it is a great reason to have an answer to the bigger “why” that can seem overwhelming sometimes.

Why this job, why this action, why this place, why this project etc. Look at your vision board. If the struggle doesn’t point to the board, move on to something better.
