One of Peter Drucker’s best quotes is:
“The greatest resource of potential demand lies in the area of non-customers.”Â
Each one of us can apply this simple truth in our jobsearch or in our current jobs. Said another way, this quote could easily be:
“The fastest way to a remarkable career lies in becoming bigger than the job itself.”
I am not sure how to measure this…but I am convinced that most jobs are, frankly, bigger than the people who are now in them.Â

GL, how do you get bigger than the job? Thoughts?
Hello Ellen…think back on all the people who you have observed in almost any job. The ones that stand out are the people who not only do the ‘expected’ job but who tend to expand upon it. The secretary who goes out of her way to be the ‘official’ greeter and sunshine pump for the entire office. The sales rep who sells accounts in his territory but who unselfishly helps others in other territories achieve their own goals, without regard or expectation of a reward. Those people, in my mind, are bigger than their job. So, hence and therefore, every job is bigger than the person ‘typically’ thinks it is.
Wow – that’s a real keeper GL, You must have had a brainlift – to be that smart. I say that because I’ve been quite taken with where they are headed lately, with brainlifts…. so I am always on the lookout for smart insights like you keep giving:-) Thanks!
Awwww shucks…now I am kicking the dirt under my desk and blushing because of this compliment…or, did you mean to say ‘facelift?’
And you do not accidentally from Moscow?
