From time to time, someone will bring a job candidate by my office to introduce them to me.   I am supposed to do the typical greet and meet deal, which i dutifully do.
i have rarely met a job candidate that handled this situation gracefully. I generally get a “nice to meet you” mumble, mumble, mumble.Â
These chance meetings are CRUCIAL for a job candidate. Yet, most fail due to lack of planning. Or, they believe the job interview is over—and are trying their best to get out the door and have no time to be nice to some random person they just met.
At our company, we make sure all candidates meet some of their future co-workers. We look for how they interact with our current staff. One does NOT need to be a hiring guru to pick out the best candidates by just observing them as they walk around and meet people.
Realize that the interview is not over, until you are out of sight.

Couldn’t agree more. Typically the people we bring in for an interview are very well screened for technical skills and capability. So what we are really looking for beyond that is if the person fits our culture. We make sure these individuals meet everyone in the office, and based on those informal meetings, we determine who we want to work with us. This is like a 360° review before the hire. None of us are hiring gurus, but we do know our culture.
I think this is very common, actually. What jobseekers miss, however, is that they are being watched for even the smallest detail. How they walk to the interview room, ie, do they have a bounce in their step. I even know someone who likes to walk them out to their car, just to see if they keep the inside of their car somewhat clean!
