If you respond to a help wanted ad that is blind, ie. no company name listed, try to get the name on the initial phone call. You have to get the name to do your research into the company. More than that, a lot of blind ads are nothing more than solicitations to join some direct sales company. A commission-only type job is fine, but one in which you have to buy products first, then sell them, and sign up your family and friends…well, it is a fast way for you to lose some hard earned cash.
These companies are also very good at inviting you to an informational meeting, where you will learn all about how to make ONE HUNDRED THOUSAND DOLLARS a year, maybe more. BUT, you have to attend the meeting first.
If a Company has to trick you into belonging to it, maybe you should question whether you want to be part of it.

Great advice. Twenty years ago when I was a rookie auditor dissatisfied with my job, I responded to a call about becoming a “regional vice president” of an unnamed company. All I had to do was come to an airport hotel, room 538, for a meeting. Being young and stupid, the thought of “who would want an inexperienced 23 year old who is dumb enough to go to hotel for an interview to try and get a vp job” never occured to me. Of course, the “interview” was about selling some crappy life insurance for some company no longer in business.
The lesson: if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. As Steven Covey says, there is no short cut. As in nature, you must plant and nurture before you can harvest. The same thing is true for a career…you need to develop and nurture your career and if you work hard, do a great job, and focus on growing, you will reap the benefits.
