HR people already know Superman.  He looks like Clark Kent, bespectacled and mild mannered, but he can’t get a date.  Bullets bounce off his chest.

He can jump over tall buildings, is faster than a speeding insult and sees through steel doors.  He wears tights, but no one knows this.

Superman is the employee we all want to keep.  He does his job best when no one is watching.  He blends into wallpaper, and never complains when times get tough.  He is always there for you, for HR, and for your company.  You can count on him to do good work.

How can you recognize your own Superman?

Here are six ways to find your Superman at your company.

1.  Is there someone you can always count on?  He is never late, always positive and always has the company’s best interests in mind.  He is not as spectacular as the real Superman, but he does super work.

2.  Is there someone who seems to relish the tough job?  In every company, there is a job no one wants to do.  It is in no one’s job description.  Superman takes more turns than anyone.  It might be cleaning the coffee pot, taking out the trash, or shoveling the front walk.  Most employees avoid this job, but not your Superman.  He does it…and, this is the obvious sign of a true Superman, he does not expect credit for doing it, either.

3. He is quietly confident.  People tend to gravitate toward him.  He is serious, yet approachable, and many employees respect his views.

4.  He is never inappropriate.  He is tasteful, classy, and a very, very good role model for your stakeholders, new employees and your community.  You are proud he works where you work.

5.  He nevers blows his own horn.  He is somewhat shy, retiring and hesitates taking credit or drawing attention to himself, or herself.

6.  You can’t imagine life at work without him.  He is THAT important.  It would be a bad day for you if he left your company.

If you know a Superman at your company, make sure others know about him.  Don’t let him hide under that mild-mannered exterior.    Your job should be all about finding and celebrating every Superman at your company.

Tell him you know his secret:  Buy  him two tickets to see Superman, the movie.  What could be more appropriate?
